Why the notice deadline matters more than the end date
Most commercial leases and many vendor agreements require written notice — commonly 30 to 180 days — to renew, terminate, or stop an automatic renewal. Once that window closes, the outcome is decided by the contract's defaults, not by you: auto-renewing agreements renew for another full term, and renewal options quietly expire. How do I calculate a notice deadline?
Notice deadline = end date minus the required notice period. A lease ending November 30, 2029 with 180 days' required notice has a notice deadline of June 3, 2029. After that date, an auto-renewing contract renews and an option lapses — the calculator above does the arithmetic and gives you a calendar reminder.
Where do I find my notice period?
In the renewal, termination, or option clause — language like "written notice no less than ninety (90) days prior to the expiration of the then-current term." Check amendments too: they frequently change dates and notice terms.
Days before the end date — calendar days or business days?
Almost always calendar days unless the contract says otherwise. This calculator uses calendar days. If your clause specifies business days or a specific delivery method (certified mail is common), follow the contract's words exactly.
